How to play

You and the computer each get 7 letter tiles from a bag of 100.
The first word goes through the star in the middle of the board. Every next word must join the tiles already on the board, the way words cross in a crossword.
Drag tiles from your rack to the board, or tap a tile and then a square. On a computer you can also click a square and type your word; click the square again to write down instead of across.
Press Play. The score shows before you play, and a word that is not in the list is marked in red.
After each move you draw new tiles. No good word? Swap some tiles or pass.

Scoring

Every letter has a value, from 1 point for common letters to 10 for Q and Z. A word scores the sum of its letters, and every new word you form in the same move counts too, including short words made alongside.

Bonus squares count only for tiles you place on them in this move: 2L doubles a letter, 3L triples it, 2W doubles the whole word and 3W triples it. Use all 7 tiles in one move and you get 50 extra points. The two blank tiles can be any letter but are worth 0.

The game ends when the bag is empty and one player uses the last tile, or after six turns in a row without points. Tiles left on a rack are taken off that player's score; if you go out first, you also get the points left on the other rack.

Easy, Medium or Hard

Easy plays everyday words and rarely goes for the big bonus squares: good for learning and for children.
Medium plays solid words and takes good chances when it sees them.
Hard checks every possible move, picks the best score and keeps strong tiles such as S and the blank for later.

Tips to score more

Learn the short words: QI, ZA, XI, XU, JO and OX let you place an expensive letter almost anywhere.
Play two words at once: a word laid alongside another one scores for every small word it forms.
Keep an S or a blank for a big move instead of spending it on a few points.

The word list

The game checks words against our list of 268,000 English words, with offensive words left out. It is close to the lists used in word games, but not the same as any official tournament dictionary, so a rare word may be missing, and the very newest ones like OK or EW are not there yet.
