Wordle Classic plays by the rules that made the game famous in 2021: one hidden five-letter word, six tries, and coloured tiles that tell you how close you are. Play the daily puzzle, the same for everyone, then switch to Unlimited for as many extra rounds as you like.

How to play

Type any five-letter word and press Enter. A green tile means the letter is in the right spot, yellow means it is in the word but somewhere else, and grey means it is not in the word at all. Use those clues for your next guess and find the word in six tries or fewer.

Tips for a better start

Open with a word full of common letters, such as SLATE, CRANE or AROSE.
Do not reuse grey letters: every guess should test something new.
Letters can repeat, so answers like EERIE or LLAMA are possible.

Where Wordle came from

Wordle was made by software engineer Josh Wardle as a present for his partner, who loved word games. He opened it to everyone in October 2021; within a few months millions of people were sharing their green and yellow squares every day, and in 2022 the game was bought by The New York Times.
